In 2019, Forbo launched the first CO2-neutral resilient floor covering: the "Marmoleum" linoleum collection. While linoleum itself is not new, Forbo's approach to developing the product is. Based on a material mix that has always been sustainable, all raw material cycles, procurement and transport routes, as well as the processes involved in production, right down to the use of energy, were analyzed and optimized throughout.
When selecting the ingredients, care was taken to ensure that they consisted of the highest possible proportion of rapidly renewable raw materials. These renewable raw materials absorb large amounts of CO2 during growth. In addition, upcycling of waste products (33% wood waste from the furniture and parquet industry and 9% tall oil from the paper industry) reduces the need for raw materials and conserves natural resources.
As a result, the amount of CO2 absorbed by renewable raw materials is greater than the CO2 emissions caused by the transport and production process. The result is a completely climate-neutral floor covering that has no greenhouse potential whatsoever and unchanged functional quality characteristics. Forbo Flooring is thus setting a groundbreaking example for sustainable and climate-neutral building products and is thus a pioneer for resilient floor coverings.
